Our Story

I’ve learned a lot about clay in 30 years as a studio potter and educator. My days are filled with exploration; ever changing as an owner of a business producing and teaching pottery. The process of working with clay’s malleable nature, adding textures and the beauty of the basic form is energizing. It continues to provide outlets for my deep feelings for nature, the environment, and human interaction. My ceramic work is defined by my love for natural forms. Symbols made by God and man are always finding their way into my work.
My work is created using the potter’s wheel, hand building, simple slump-molds, and combinations of these. I have created original designs of hand stamped pottery including Herd of Buffalos, Raised Pinecone, Celtic Knots and Christian Inspirational themed. I make sculptural piece, incorporating hand carved elements, enhancing classical wheel-thrown forms.

My goal is to illuminate lives with simple forms that speak primarily about functionality and the intimacy gained through daily use. The life of a pot only becomes complete when it is used. I strive to make work not for the shelf only but for the table. My garden wares provide adornment for the yard and function for nature.

Since opening in 1999, Artyard Studio has been providing a place where you and your children can explore many aspects of art and the creative process.   We offer a variety of art classes from which one may select.   We have a new classroom allowing for NEW CLASSES for both children and adults!

Workshop lessons do change from session to session.   Since 1987, we have developed many projects that stimulate creative thinking as well as personal artistic growth.   We encourage our students to help in developing project ideas that are explored by the group.   In addition, the techniques learned and the friendships found will create a positive learning experience.

An artist and teacher, Thom has been bringing informative and enriching classes to artist of all ages for many years.   His past teaching positions include a 12 year appointment at U.B.’s Creative Craft Center,  other positions providing figure sculpture, clay classes for the Greater Buffalo Area.
